This area of grass was known as 'Temple Fields which itself might have suggested that there was something historic located there. It turned out that there was indeed a significant number of ancient remains, though not, in fact, a temple, or place of worship. What was discovered was evidence of both Roman and pre-Roman settlement and the results were interesting because they provide the first evidence of Roman settlement in the Walthamstow area. Our students lent a hand to clean up some of the pottery that was found and were able to learn about the work of archaeologists. We now have an excellent record of what lies beneath the new Sports Hall!
